Swimming Pool Leak Detection Processes

Visual inspections will help you determine if your pool is leaking. The plumbing, liner, exterior pool components, and water level should be assessed if you think that your pool is losing water on a regular basis.
The Plumbing
Inspect the plumbing that is connected to the pool pump. Small voids between pipe sections could lead to a considerable amount of water loss over time. First, turn on the pool pump. Check the plumbing that runs from the pump to the pool. Then, take notice of the property that is near the plumbing materials. Saturated surfaces may be indicative of a leak.
The Liner
Inspect your pool's liner. It should be lying flush with the side walls and flooring materials that comprise the pool's interior. Look for dips that may be a result of sand washing away under the liner. Check for torn vinyl around plumbing, filters, and lights.
In order to have the liner professionally assessed, hire a pool contractor to perform an inspection. The contractor can determine if a pinhole or another type of damage is present.
If a liner has minor damage, a contractor will use a dry or wet patch product to repair it. The location of the damaged vinyl will determine which type of patch product the contractor uses.
The Exterior Components
Cracks in exterior components that your pool is made of could lead to water loss. Check the decking materials that surround the pool. If you have an aboveground pool, check the outer shell of the pool. Any structural damage that is discovered should be professionally repaired by the contractor who initially installed the pool.
Water Tests
There are a couple of water tests that can be used to check for a leak. If you own an inground pool, use a bucket test to detect water loss. Fill a bucket with water until the water is at the same height as the water within the pool. Place the bucket on the top step of your pool.
After a couple of days have passed, compare the bucket's water level with the pool's water level. If the water levels are vastly different, a serious leak may be present.
A dye test can also be used to determine if there is a leak. A pool contractor will add dye to your pool. Based upon the pattern of the dye, once it has settled in the pool, the contractor can determine if the pool is leaking, plus locate where the leak is originating from.
